Uncle Vanya - The Delicate Detail.

Join acclaimed theatre director Sarah Goodes (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf) for an intimate masterclass delving into the intricacies of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. This two day workshop will explore the delicate detail at the heart of Chekhovian performance. Participants will work through selected scenes and exercises, guided toward a deeper understanding of subtext, rhythm, truthful stillness and emotional nuance. Designed for actors and theatre students eager to refine their craft, this is a rare opportunity to learn from a master director and uncover the subtle power that makes Uncle Vanya an enduring work of theatrical art.  

This masterclass is open to professional actors and those pursuing a career in theatre. Your bio and headshot will be requested upon booking. 


Sarah most recently directed The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith adapted by Joanna Murray Smith for the Sydney Theatre Company which is on tour to Melbourne. In 20023 she directed a sell-out production of Julia by Joanna Murray Smith staring Justine Clarke for the Sydney Theatre Company which has just finished its 3rd tour. Also in 2023 she directed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf for Red Stitch Theatre Company which has gone on to a season at the Comedy Theatre and Sydney Theatre Company. She directed the world premiere of Sunday by Anthony Weigh for the Melbourne Theatre Company staring Nikki Shiels and the sell out production of Virginia Gays Cyrano for the MTC which toured to the Perth Festival.

From 2012 – 2016 she was the Resident Director at the Sydney Theatre Company and from 2016 – 2020 she was the Associate Artistic Director at the Melbourne Theatre Company.

Sarah directed the world premiere of Switzerland by Joanna Murray Smith for STC in 2014 which was nominated for many awards including a Helpmann for Best Direction. In 2018 her production of The Children won 3 Helpmann Awards including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Production. Her production of Golden Shield by Anchuli Felicia King was nominated for 7 Greenroom Awards winning for Best Design.

For Melbourne Theatre Company, Sarah’s work includes Sunday, Cyrano, The Sound Inside, Home, I’m Darling, Così (with the Sydney Theatre Company) Golden Shield, Arbus & West, Astroman, A Doll’s House: Part 2, The Children (with Sydney Theatre Company), Three Little Words and John. As Resident Director at Sydney Theatre Company, Sarah directed The Hanging, Disgraced, Orlando, Battle of Waterloo, Switzerland, The Effect, Vere (Faith), The Splinter and Edward Gant’s Amazing Feats of Loneliness. Sarah’s other directing credits include Grace (Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre); The Sugar House (Belvoir); The Sweetest Thing, The Small Things, Elling and Black Milk (B Sharp Belvoir); Vertigo and the Virginia, The Schelling Point, Hilt and What Happened Was… (Old Fitzroy Theatre). Scorched at NIDA and Earthquakes in London at VCA.

Other directing credits include The Weekend by Charlotte Wood adapted by Sue Smith at Belvoir Street, The Sugar House by Alana Valentine also at Belvoir Street Theatre.

In 2014 Sarah was the recipient of the Gloria Payten Fellowship. She studied English Literature and Theatre at the University of NSW and the University of California San Diego and has a Post Graduate Diploma in Theatre Directing from the Victorian College of the Arts.

She has recently graduated from a Masters of Screen Business at ATFRS.
