Caroline Lee

Caroline is based in Melbourne, Australia, and has worked professionally as a theatre, television, film and voice actress for over thirty years. She has worked with many companies around Australia including the Malthouse, Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, Bell Shakespeare, Back to Back Theatre, Red Stitch Actors Theatre, Chamber Made Opera, MKA, Finucane and Smith, HeLD Productions, Hildegard, Playbox and La Mama. She is an ensemble member of the Red Stitch Actors Theatre, and has received three Greenroom Awards for Best Actress, as well as an OAM for services to the Performing Arts.

Most recently she has played the matriarch Emma in The Doll Trilogy: Kid Stakes, Other Times and Summer of the 17th Doll by Ray Lawler (dir: Ella Caldwell) at Red Stitch Actors Theatre; Old One in Stuck by Megan Twycross (dir: Susie Dee) at La Mama; Lola Montez in The Exotic Lives of Lola Montez with Finucane and Smith; Rae in Super by Emilie Collyer (dir: Emma Valente) at Red Stitch; played June in June: a monologue about not speaking by Patrick McCarthy (dir: Emily Tomlins) at Theatreworks; and appeared in Shhhh by Clare Barron (dir: Emma Valente); and Wittenoom by Mary Anne Butler (dir: Susie Dee) at Red Stitch.

Caroline has also developed a strong reputation for her work in one-woman shows. She played Grace Marks in the highly successful one-woman show, directed by Laurence Strangio, alias Grace by Margaret Atwood; Marguerite in La Douleur by Marguerite Duras; Lola Strong in the three interiors of Lola Strong written by Caroline; Sylvia Plath in A Kind of Fabulous Hatred by Barry Dickins; Elizabeth in Waking Up Dead by Trudy Hellier; a variety of Catherines in Catherine: the body politic written by Caroline; six different characters in the one-woman adaptation of her novel, Stripped and June in June: a monologue about not speaking by Patrick McCarthy. She is currently developing a new work: Exhibition with long-term collaborators Laurence Strangio, Meg White and Kat Carrington.

Film and television appearances include main cast roles in The Newsreader (series 1,2 and 3) and Bogan Pride; and roles in Miss Fisher’s MODern Murder Mysteries, The Dressmaker, Tangle, Winners and Losers, Satisfaction, Stingers, MDA, Halifax fp, Blue Heelers, Neighbours, Holidays on the River Yarra and Dogs in Space.

Caroline has narrated over 150 audiobooks, including a number of bestselling titles, for example Big Little Truths, Here One Moment, Apples Never Fall, Big Little Lies and Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty, and The Shifting Fog and The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. She has received four AudioFile Earphones Awards, including Best Audiobooks of the Year 2021 and 2025 for Apples Never Fall and Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty.
